STEIN is a tile and stone atelier working out of Basel and New York. We make modular surfaces for residential interiors — measured, drawn, and set with the discipline of a typesetter.

A bath drawn before it was set.
The client wanted a single material, one cut, no decoration. We bookmatched a slab of Calacatta Borghini across three walls — joints mitered to 45°, grout pigment mixed against five test boards on the floor of the shower.
The full plan was drafted at 1:20 in pencil before any stone left the quarry. Two setters, nine working days, no subcontractors.
04Method — five chapters, in sequence.
Intake
Brief, site photos, and a phone call. We decline more than we accept.
Survey
On-site measurement to ±1 mm. Photogrammetry of complex walls.
Draw
Plan, elevation, and tile-by-tile setting drawings at 1:20.
Set
Two setters on site. One foreman. Site swept end of each day.
Seal
Two return visits to seal grout and check movement.
A palette, not a moodboard.
We keep a working palette of about twelve materials at any time. They are chosen to age together — not to match.
